I came out in the early 80’s. I was 20 and ready. I met an older guy who I was attracted to. Things became a bit serious. But I couldn’t have him meet my folks, he was 15 years older. Also, this was when AIDS was just being whispered about. Back then, every club had its unofficial “night”. Monday was GiGi’s, Tuesday was The Gas Station, Wednesday was Backstreet, Thursday was Tiffany’s, Friday was Menjo’s, Saturday was Backstreet, Saturday was Backstreet, and Sunday was Menjo’s. All of the other bars, which were plentiful tried to lure patrons in being the new kid on the block. You could go out every night of the week and the clubs were PACKED. Then there were the smaller bars which a break in the club culture. Footlights was a favorite, Salute, and Paul who owned BackPocket across from Backstreet. It was entertainers of the disco era, performing, Lime, Pamela Stanley, Two Tons of Fun, Sylvester, and the incomparable Divine. Of those I met, not one unkind word to say about then. While working at the high end restaurant I was at, Liza, Andy, Jack Wrangler, and the Village People were clients. It was a fun time. I never partook in the drug woerld, didn’t drink until I was legal. We bad weather was scheduled to arrive, we’d wait until it was really bad to the bars we’d never been too. We were crazy. Bit was a fun time. I miss all my friends, Bill, Jeffrey, Kevin, Steven. They were all talented, exciting, creative young men. Just by chance I was a Tiffany’s browsing around, I felt a,tap turned around a looked into the eyes of my future. “Hi, I’m Matt”. “Would you care to go somewhere quieter?” We ended up at my favorite places Tiffany’s. He was charming, attractive, handsome. I gave my number thinking nothing would develop. A few nights later he called while I was having plans with my folks. My mom asked “who was that”. I told her, she said QUICK call him back. You don’t turn down a nice invitation. That dinner led to 1 year, then 2 more years. We decided we were a couple. Our folks were happy taking us on a cruise for our 10 th anniversary. We soon had to leave for a new job. My mom thought I’d want to stay back with our dogs to see if it worked out. I told her sadly no. We left Detroit feeling defeated and scared, but quickly adjusted. Our folks visited and felt we made the right move. I’d hate to be back on the market again, especially down here. We consider ourselves grateful and very lucky.
