I have high functionning autism and I love hearing about other people with autism. You should totally do a video on Ezra. One thing that I should point out is that Simon being so social will help him a lot when he gets older. I was always seen as a pretty social kid and that helped me when I was in school to find friends even though I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 18. I hid my autism really well but, that was at a cost. It took so much energy to hide my autism that I was always exausted and stuggled a lot in school because of that. Once I got diagnosed, I slowly stopped hiding my autism and my grades went from 60% to 90+% in most classes. Take this from me, encourage your children to act themselves and not hide their autism, it will help them a lot and allow them to focus on the important things like relationships, school, work, etc. Yes, people with autism can, depending on where they are on the spectrum and what help they’ve received, hold down a job. I have a normal job just like any other adult, the only adjustment that my boss has been nice enough to make is to always make sure that things are explained clearly with no double meaning. What I mean is, don’t expect me to understand that if you’re saying « Good job » in a certain tone it means that I can improve. I won’t be able to make that link. So, whenever I have a meeting at work, my boss will always have some time to explain something to me if I didn’t understand it. He’s aware of my autism so, sometimes, if he think that there can be a double meaning to something that was said, he’ll take me to the side later on to make sure that I understood the correct meaning. He also makes sure that his expectations are clear with me. Like, instead of telling me « You can improve on your ladder manipulations », he’ll tell me something like « When you’re holding your ladder, I’d like to work on doing x » then, he’ll demonstrate. That way he makes sure that I understand. It’s something pretty small but, it helps a LOT. So, I just wanted to reassure you that it’s not because you’re autistic that you can’t live a normal life. I live alone at 19 and I get the help of an educator for certain things about once/week or 2. We are hoping tho, that I’ll be independant for the autism side of things soon (I have other diagnoses that will require more treament and help, but I shouldn’t need an educator to come every week for more then 2 years, in fact, I’ve been told that they’re aiming for me no longer needing the educator after only 1 year of treaments).
