And importantly, we see he gets attached to others easily. When he finally connects the dots on Return by Death, he has the choice to step away from danger he knows is coming, but he takes the call to action because he had grown to care about Felt and Rom just from talking to them in the previous loops, and he's uncomfortable with just leaving them to die when he has the choice to intervene.
