As a Pittsburgher myself, i will say most of these reasons tend to apply to the city itself, rather than the surrounding metro area. Look at Cranberry Township. It has had a huge growth over the past 20+ years. There are job opportunities available in that area. That is thanks to its lower tax rate, both when it comes to property and sales. Sure, the Pittsburgh area doesn't have much diversity, it seems like most white people have either a strong Italian or Polish heritage, and not much outside that. Though, we did have a Chinatown at one point. The loyalty people have to Pittsburgh is unlike most other cities, people are born here and they stay and grow old with each other, it's like keeping Pittsburgh as an old friend. If you can find a strong sense of community like that, it's something to cherish. BTW, I am in my mid-twenties and follow a vegetarian diet myself, the only things that bother me are the terrain/roads/infrastructure and weather. Roads are so hilly, and you gotta know where your going, and if you ask a local for directions, you will get confused, because we use landmarks than road names for directions.
