You handled the subject well in my opinion. I'm (half) black myself and I don't think being black had a significant impact on my dating prospects. I live in Germany. I actually met white girls who explicitly said they aren't into black guys and ones that said they were. Both were uncommon in my experience and most girls seemed pretty neutral about me being black. At least they didn't say anything. I don't know what they thought. I might be an outlier from the typical black experience though because I have more European looking features and have often been asked if I was a model. So it might be much different for fully black guys with less than good looks. My East Asian friends definitely struggled hard with girls. They were seen as less attractive and girls openly said demeaning and racist things to them. One of the most charismatic guys I know is Vietnamese and even he struggled. So it's not just a matter of attitude in that case.
